Who is Jerry Day?
Jerry Lewis Day was born in East Texas in 1954. In 1958, the Day family moved to DeRidder, LA. Until the present time, DeRidder is still Jerry's home.
Music has always been an important tradition in the Day family. The love for playing guitar and fiddle was handed down from grandfather to son and on to grandson. In 1963, at the age of 8 years old, Jerry lost his father. At the age of 10, Jerry's grandfather purchased his first guitar from a local pawn shop at the price of $10.00. Jerry still has that guitar along with the fiddle which was handed down from his maternal grandfather. He considers those two instruments as his most priced possessions.
Learning to play the guitar was just a little more difficult for Jerry. It was hard to find anyone to teach him due to the fact that he had to play upside down. Guitars in those days were only made right handed and Jerry is left-handed. He ended up teaching himself most of what he's learned. To this day, Jerry is still known to many as the left-handed guitar picker. Jerry is most thankful to the guitar manfacturers , that finallly recognized there are a few left-handed players out there. There are now custom-made left-handed guitars. Jerry doesn't have to play the guitar upside down or re-string it anymore.
In March of 1977, Jerry married to Marilyn Ashworth, the daughter of Rev. & Mrs. Wilbern Ashworth. From a very young age, Marilyn played the piano and sang with her brother and sister, Donnis & Gwen as the Ashworth Trio. They grew up traveling with their parents and singing from church to church. After Jerry & Marilyn married, Jerry left the group he had been with and joined with the Ashworth Trio to form a new group - Jerry Day & Sounds of Gospel.
Jerry & Marilyn have been blessed with two daughters - Amber & Ashli - who both are now singing. Ashli is also pursuing learning to play the fiddle. Both precious young ladies, melodious voices are feature on Jerry's new CD THE CALL.
Jerry has recorded several projects, including a christmas project recorded in 1999 entitled "Christmas With the Days".
